I have just moved into a home with a whirlpool. How do I operate it?

  • Do not turn the whirlpool system on until the bathtub is completely filled (approximately 2 inches above the rim of the highest jet located on the bathtub wall).
  • Do not add any liquids or powders to the water, especially foamy, bubbly or oily types.
  • Do not use the tub with the whirlpool system activated if you have taken alcohol or strong drugs.
  • If you are under a doctor’s care, consult your physician for guidelines as to water temperature and duration of each use.
  • Use cool to cold water if you want a refreshing, invigorating session.
  • Use tepid to moderately warm water if you simply want to relax and unwind
  • Use warm to hot water if you want to ease minor muscular tension. Consult your physician as to the water temperature you should use. However, under no circumstances use a bath with water above 104ºF (41ºC).
  • LIMIT your first session to no more than 10 MINUTES and select a lukewarm temperature for the water. The massaging effect created by the jet flow increases in direct proportion to the temperature and duration. Staying in the tub with the whirlpool system on for long periods of time, especially with the water at a high temperature may have a tiring effect and could have severe consequences. Should you become drowsy during use, get out of the tub right away. Try the next bath at a cooler temperature.
  • Before turning on the system, make sure that the jets are not pointing upward to prevent splashing outside of the tub.
  • Use the timer on the wall or the pushbutton on the tub to turn the whirlpool system on.
  • Direct the massage action on jets by placing a finger on the jet eyeball and directing it to the desired body area.
  • Vary the intensity of the massaging action with the air control knob(s) located on or near the rim of the tub.
  • For less intensity (less air/more water), turn the air control knob clockwise toward the closed (inward) position.
  • For greater intensity (more air/less water), turn the air control knob counterclockwise toward the open (outward) position.
  • In most systems you can stop the massaging action entirely for a particular jet by rotating the eyeball to completely shut off the jet.
  • To end a session, use the pushbutton on the bathtub to turn the whirlpool system off. If equipped with a timer, the timer will do this automatically. After the whirlpool action has stopped, the tub may be used for regular bathing purposes.
  • Children, handicapped or partially incapacitated persons should not use the Hydra- Baths tub without supervision, especially when warm water is used.
  • Users with long hair should tie up their hair and/or use a bathing cap to prevent hair from entering the system and clogging the jets or suction openings, which may cause in jury or severe consequences.
  • Keep small objects such as beads, buttons, toys or fragments thereof out of the tub. They could enter the system through the jets or the suction openings and clog up the system and/or damage the pump.

Whirlpool system will not turn on. What is wrong?

If The Motor Won't Start:
Make sure the pneumatic switch or timer is in the ON position.*
Check for blown circuit breakers or fuses. (
95% of these problems are resolved by resetting your GFCI (ground-fault circuit-interrupter) button. Some systems are setup with a GFCI receptacle inside the pump compartment.)

Note: The CD(Q) pump housing is a sonically welded unit. It cannot be disassembled for servicing. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Refer all service to qualified personnel.

If The Pump Won’t Prime (Pump turns on, but water will not go through the pump.)

  • Make sure all suction and discharge lines and ports are open and unobstructed.
  • Ensure that water is at the proper level for pump to prime (1 inch above the highest jet).
  • Check for blocked jets.
  • Check for air leaks in the suction line and loose pump union connection.

Make sure the pump suction air pathway escape is at least at the same level or below the highest jet. There are no serviceable parts in this system. All service, repairs and electrical wiring must be performed by a qualified service technician in accordance with all applicable local and national codes.

* Most whirlpools incorporate an air switch to actuate the pump. Some, however, incorporate electronic controls. It is best to contact the whirlpool manufacturer for troubleshooting instructions if that is the case since most electronic controls will require a service technician

How do I order a trim set?
Many whirlpool products look similar, but are manufactured by different companies. To determine that this is a HydraBaths product, remove the suction cover and verify that “HydraBaths” is printed on it. Second, determine the color needed. Then, trim sets can be ordered from one of our distributors or from HydraBaths directly.

To ensure ordering the correct replacement parts, photograph the items that need replacing and email them to sales@hydrabaths.com or mail them to:

How do I get a replacement pump?
The pump is made up of 2 components: the motor, which is the metal part; and the wet end, which is the plastic part. Together they make the pump.

To determine what type of pump you have, look at the label on the wet end. The model number will be on that label. The model number is coded to determine the type of pump that you need. Then contact a distributor above or HydraBaths directly.

How do I clean my whirlpool system?
Regular Cleaning:
Because mineral deposits, soap scum and bacteria are detrimental to finished surfaces, it is important to keep your bathtub and the fixtures (fittings) of your HydraBaths’ Whirlpool System clean on a regular basis. The best way to counteract the soiling and oftentimes corrosive action of these residues is to prevent water from remaining on any finished surface.

For regular maintenance-type cleaning of the HydraBaths’ Whirlpool System equipped bathtub, proceed as follows:
1. After each use, rinse all exposed surfaces of the HydraBaths’ tub with clear warm water, then wipe off all standing water until completely dry.

2. Once a week, wash all exposed surfaces of the bathtub with mild solution (as recommended by your bathtub manufacturer). Check for stubborn spots. Oily or greasy spots can be lifted with denatured alcohol. Rinse and dry as in Step 1.

WARNING: Under no circumstances use wire brushes, metal sponges, knives, steel wool or scouring pads on any part of the tub, nor solvent that contain petroleum distillates such as acetone, paint thinner, benzene or abrasive cleanser on any part of the tub, nor ammonia or chlorine-based cleansing agents on any plated surface. These will remove the plating, thereby voiding the warranty on the finish.

3. Purge and clean the entire system monthly. HydraBaths recommends WhirlClean™, which is a cleaner specifically formulated for whirlpool bathtub systems. WhirlClean™ helps to remove body and bath oils, soap residue and other sources that can contribute to bacterial growth in whirlpool systems. WhirlClean™ is phosphate free and environmentally friendly.

Directions: Fill the tub with warm water to 1” above the highest jet. Pour four ounces of WhirlClean™ into the bathtub water. Turn on pump and run for ten minutes. Drain, then rinse out tub with warm water. Dry exposed surfaces as in Step 1.

In some cases, either the pump location has been moved or the whirlpool system or bathtub was not installed properly. This may be the cause of sagging pipes that do not drain properly and buildup may occur. If the system has been modified in any way, contact the bathtub manufacturer or a plumber for repairs.

How do I purchase a whirlpool system?

There are many features to consider when buying a whirlpool bathtub. Below are some questions that you will want to consider to help you choose a whirlpool system that is right for you.

What color, shape and size of bathtub do you want?
There are many different bathtub manufacturers that are offering an abundance of different colors, sizes and shapes of tubs. Choose one that will complement the overall look of your bathroom in the space that is available.

Is the whirlpool for therapy or relaxation?
The main reason you are purchasing a whirlpool will help to determine how many jets you need, size of pump and whether you want an air system.

Do you want a tub that will accommodate two or only one bather?
Many bathtub manufacturers provide bathtubs that can accommodate two people. How much space do you have? What is your budget?

What is the tub's water capacity?
The larger the tub the larger the water heater that should be considered. Be sure that the water heater matches the capacity of the tub.

How many therapy jets do you need?
More is not always better. Most whirlpools come equipped with a total of 4, 6 or 8 jets. For therapy needs, the most important decision is where to place the jets, the GPM (gallons per minute) and pressure rating of the jets.

What style of jet do you want?
Small jets offer a low volume, high impact flow.Large jets give you greater flow volume and usually lower impact. Some jets are now adjustable for flow volume.

How much horsepower will you need to operate the system you choose?
The more horsepower you specify the more action you will get in the whirlpool. Pump size (Hp) determines water flow (GPM). Be careful! Some manufacturers "uprate" their pump's horsepower.

What type of controls do you want?
Whirlpools are available with electronic or pneumatic controls, with a wide array of features.

Do you want an air-only tub, a whirlpool or a combination of the two?
Air tubs incorporate a blower to drive air through special jets in the bottom of the tub. This tends to give a gentle total body massage. Combined with a traditional whirlpool you get the best of both worlds.

What is available for cleaning and sanitation of whirlpool baths?
Cleaning the whirlpool can be a challenge. Some manufacturers offer whirlpool bath cleaners (chemicals) that help remove or prevent build up of "bioslime" in the piping system. Ask your dealer or manufacturer what they recommend.
